From middle age, regular blood pressure measurements should also take place at home. Hypertension is the number one widespread disease in western industrialized countries. Painless suffering can trigger numerous deadly complications, such as the dreaded heart attack. However, it is important to know what to look for in the measurements so that incorrect measurement values do not occur.
Many sufferers are unaware of their high blood pressure
According to health experts, almost every third adult in Germany suffers from hypertension. Many have no idea of their high blood pressure. This can have dangerous consequences, since untreated hypertension increases the risk of, among other things, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease and kidney failure. It is therefore clear that it is better to diagnose and treat hypertension early. Therefore, people of all ages should know their blood pressure values. Single blood pressure measurement is of little value
High blood pressure can lead to serious diseases such as stroke, heart or kidney failure.
"Cardiovascular diseases are still the number one cause of death," said Prof. Dr. med. For the internist, a single blood pressure measurement is of little value - neither in the doctor's office nor in the pharmacy.
For example, it is known that too high values are measured in medical practices (“white coat effect”).
On the other hand, especially in middle-aged men, blood pressure may increase during working hours, but it may be normal in the doctor's office. This is called masked hypertension.
According to the ABDA, this phenomenon is associated with a high risk.
First come to rest
Prof. Middeke recommends the following procedure for a measurement: First, the patient should come to rest physically, mentally and mentally. Then the blood pressure is measured for the first time.
If the value is increased, a second or a third measurement should take place after one to two minutes and relaxation.
According to the information, so-called deep breathing is the simplest and most effective form of relaxation. It is inhaled deeply and slowly through the nose and exhaled deeply and slowly through the mouth.
As a result, high blood pressure drops quickly in a natural way.
How high can the values be?
But how high can the blood pressure actually be?
As the ABDA announcement states, hypertension occurs when blood pressure is 140 to 90 or higher; in people over 80 years over 160 to 90.
With a few exceptions for patients with concomitant diseases, blood pressure values below this are not treated with medication.
Optimally, the blood pressure is below 120 to 80. "But that does not mean that blood pressure has to be lowered so low by medicines," said Middeke.
“On the contrary, that would not be healthy for many patients. A drop below 140 to 90 is often enough. Especially for patients between 65 and 80 years, the doctor has a great deal of discretion with regard to the therapy goals, ”said the expert.
Treat hypertension naturally
Hypertension is often used to lower blood pressure quickly. But in many cases, blood pressure can be reduced without pills.
The most important thing here is to exercise regularly, reduce possible excess weight and avoid cigarettes and high alcohol consumption.

In addition, it has long been known that some home remedies and a balanced, healthy diet can make a significant contribution to lowering blood pressure.
It is very important here: salt only in moderation. A high-salt diet can raise blood pressure. No more than four to six grams of salt should be consumed per day. In addition, the menu should generally contain a lot of fruits and vegetables.
Take medication early in the morning
If medication is necessary, Prof. Middeke recommends taking it early in the morning.
“It's best to swallow the blood pressure drops on the edge of the bed in the morning, not just at breakfast. Because the earlier the drug is taken, the sooner it can work, ”says the doctor.
"With an evening intake, the blood pressure is sometimes lowered too much at night, and then the body reacts with unwanted countermeasures."
