The human hormone system is extremely delicate and reacts to the smallest changes. In a healthy body, all hormones are well coordinated so that all processes run properly. If there are too many female hormones, this can cause various symptoms in both men and women.

What are female hormones?

In order to understand the symptoms, it is important to first get an idea of ​​the various hormones. The most important hormones in the female cycle include the sex hormones from the estrogen group and the progesterone. FSH, the follicle-stimulating hormone, and the luteinizing hormone (LH) also play an important role. The term "female hormones" is somewhat misleading here, because these hormones are also present in men and are involved in the formation of testosterone in the testicular cells, among other things. However, the hormone content in the female body is significantly higher.

Too high estrogen levels in women - effects and symptoms

Estrogens are one of the most important steroid hormones from the group of sex hormones. They promote the maturation of the egg cell in the first half of the cycle and ensure good blood flow to the endometrium. Due to the influence of estrogens, the cervix opens so that the man's sperm can reach the egg. Likewise, the hormones indirectly trigger ovulation via the pituitary gland. But estrogens not only affect the genital organs, they also

  • also have a mood-lifting effect,
  • inhibit bone loss,
  • have a hypotensive effect
  • and promote bowel function.

After the last menstrual period, the estrogen level in women drops sharply. This can cause menopause symptoms. Not only a hormone deficiency, but also an excess of hormones can cause symptoms. An excess of estrogen is also called estrogen dominance because it is often accompanied by a lack of progesterone. A too high level of estrogen can be noticed by various symptoms. The symptoms vary individually. Not all symptoms may appear in every woman or every cycle.

Water retention and the associated uncomfortable feeling of tension in the breasts and increased sensitivity to pain in the breasts are typical. Women with too much estrogen have painful menstruation and are more likely to suffer from endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue outside the uterus occurs. As a result, there is severe pain, especially during the menstrual period.

Estrogens also have a big impact on mood. An estrogen dominance therefore often manifests itself in mood swings, a pronounced fear or even depression. Many women also complain of headaches and sleep disorders. Scientific studies also show a connection between an excess of estrogen and the risk of developing breast cancer.

Symptoms of excess estrogen in men

Estrogen is only found in small amounts in the male body. An excess can therefore cause complaints. A sign of an increased estrogen level is the so-called gynecomastia. It is a benign growth of the mammary gland. Gynecomastia can affect one or both sides of the chest. Too many female hormones also stimulate the prostate to grow. Potency also suffers from hormone shifts.

Excess estrogen - the causes

An excess of estrogen often arises from the fact that the female sex hormones are not sufficiently broken down. In order for the estrogen level to be within the normal range, the hormones must first be deactivated in the liver and then excreted. Several factors can disrupt normal estrogen metabolism in the body.

Excess estrogen due to waning ovarian function

Although the estrogen level drops sharply after menopause, it can also increase in the years before the last menstrual period. The reason for this is the diminished ovarian reserve. If the control mechanisms in the body determine that the woman's egg reserve is severely decimated, hormone production is increased in order to stimulate cell maturation in the best possible way.

Too much estrogen from external estrogens

External estrogens are increasingly the cause of an estrogen excess or estrogen dominance. These are substances that are very similar in structure to body hormones. They can bind to the hormone receptors in the body, causing the same reactions as the body's own hormones.

These hormone-like substances are also called xenoestrogens or endocrine disruptors because they disturb the sensitive hormone balance in the body. These disruptive factors include, for example, flame retardants such as polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), but also parabens, which are found in many cosmetics. BPA (bisphenol-A), a plasticizer in plastics, also develops a hormone-like effect in the body. For example, BPA is found in plastic water bottles or other plastic objects.

Excess estrogen through obesity

Most people are aware that obesity and obesity can promote the development of diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure. However, the connection between obesity and hormonal complaints is often neglected. So the fat cells increasingly produce estrogen. The more fat (especially belly fat), the more estrogens are released. Being overweight also lowers the level of hormone-binding globulins in the blood, so that more free estrogen can circulate in the bloodstream.

Alcohol creates too many female hormones

Regular consumption of alcohol can increase the estrogen estrone. The level of DHEA-S in the blood also increases. This hormone can also be converted to estrogen.

Estrogen-producing tumors as the cause of an excess of estrogen

The rarer causes of an excess of estrogen include hormone-producing tumors. Among other things, malignant tumors of the adrenal cortex can produce estrogens and thus cause very high estrogen levels in the blood. Ovarian tumors, i.e. tumors on the ovaries, can also produce estrogens.

Male estrogen excess - possible causes

An excess of estrogen in men can also be caused by the production of estrogens in the fat cells. Obese men are therefore more likely to have increased estrogen levels than normal-weight men. Likewise, an increased activity of the aromatase enzyme can lead to an increase in the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. Another cause of excess estrogen in older men is treatment with female sex hormones to treat prostate cancer. Due to the possible side effects, this therapy is rarely carried out.

Excess progesterone - symptoms and effects in women

Progesterone is the hormone that dominates especially in the second half of the cycle. It is also known as the yellow body hormone and prepares the woman's uterus for implantation of the fertilized egg. Progesterone also causes an increase in body temperature and a compression of the glands in the breast. In men, progesterone plays a role in sperm motility, among other things.

In contrast to the lack of progesterone, the excess of progesterone is rather rare. However, the symptoms of both disorders are very similar. This is because a long-term excess of hormones can cause so-called progesterone resistance to develop. The body cells then no longer respond to the corresponding hormone, so that deficiency symptoms occur despite sufficient or even high blood levels.

The affected women feel sleepy and have difficulty concentrating. Similar to estrogen dominance, women with too much progesterone are prone to depression and mood swings. An unwanted weight gain due to water retention can also indicate an excess of progesterone.

Causes of too much progesterone

An excessively high level of progesterone usually occurs as a result of hormone therapy. For example, women who want to have children and have a luteal weakness often receive progesterone to prevent miscarriage. Even in menopause, women often get a progesterone preparation. In this case, the hormone is said to regulate overgrowth of the endometrium. Even after surgical removal of the ovaries, progesterone-containing medication is often prescribed by a doctor in addition to estrogens.

Too many female hormones - conventional treatments

Basically, both naturopathic and conventional treatment are based on the possible causes. If the increased hormone levels in the blood are based, for example, on a hormone-producing tumor, it must be removed surgically. If there is too much estrogen or progesterone in the blood due to hormone intake, the hormone dose must be adjusted or the therapy may have to be stopped.

Hormone therapy for excess hormones

At first, hormone therapy with an excess of hormones seems absurd. After all, there are too many hormones circulating in the bloodstream and there is no hormone deficiency. However, the complaints are not always caused by an actual surplus. Too often, only the hormone ratios are wrong. In absolute terms, estrogen dominance is not always an excess of estrogen. However, since the body produces too little progesterone, there is too much estrogen in relation to progesterone. One treatment option for this imbalance is hormone therapy.

In hormone therapy, a distinction must be made between treatment with bioidentical and synthetic hormones. Bioidentical hormones are also called body-identical hormones. The molecular structures of these hormone substances are identical to those in the body, so that the organism recognizes them as the body's own. The bioidentical hormones are made from yam (Dioscorea composita) or from soy. In contrast, the structure of synthetic hormones has changed. Hormones do not occur in this form in nature.

Reduce alcohol

Alcohol interferes with the function of the liver and thus hinders the breakdown of estrogens. Just a glass of wine a day can upset the hormonal balance. So if you suffer from an excess of estrogen, you should completely avoid alcohol or only drink a glass of wine, sparkling wine or beer on special occasions.

Avoid external estrogens

Today we are faced with numerous environmental toxins that can damage the hormone system. Not all foreign estrogens can be avoided, but people with hormone-related complaints should develop an awareness of these disruptive factors. It is recommended to eat organically grown food. Many pesticides develop hormone-like effects in the body and can therefore cause symptoms.

The same applies to plasticizers such as phthalates and BPA. Water should therefore never be consumed from plastic bottles. In a study, scientists from the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main demonstrated estrogenic pollution in mineral water. A lot of hormone-like substances are released from the bottle when it is exposed to the heat. As a precaution, as a consumer you should use refillable glass or stainless steel bottles.

The increased consumption of tap water can also be problematic. Legislators have so far not specified any limit values ​​for hormones in tap water. However, numerous measurements show hormones in the water. But how do the hormones get into the water? For one thing, some careless consumers simply dispose of hormone-containing drugs in the toilet. On the other hand, for example, the active ingredients of the contraceptive pill get into the wastewater via the user's urine. These residues cannot be filtered by the sewage treatment plants and thus get back into the drinking water. Special water filters for home use can help here.

If there are too many female hormones, it is also worth taking a closer look at your own cosmetic products. Creams and Co. often contain substances that are suspected of influencing the hormone system. These include, for example:

  • Parabens such as ethyl paraben or methyl paraben,
  • the UV filter ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (OMC)
  • and benzophenone-3.

An alternative is to make the cosmetic products yourself, because freshly mixed cosmetics do not use any dyes or preservatives. If you do not want to make your own cosmetic products, you can look for the seals of quality for natural and organic cosmetics when you buy them. Various seals guarantee that the certified products are free of parabens, PEGs, paraffins or synthetic preservatives.

Regulate the hormonal balance through a healthy diet

A balanced and nutritious diet can have a positive effect on numerous illnesses and complaints. The hormone system can also benefit from a change in diet. For example, an increased dietary fiber content can lower the estrogen level. Dietary fiber is an indigestible part of the food that is mainly found in plant-based foods. Good sources of fiber are:

  • Grain,
  • Fruit,
  • legumes
  • and vegetables.

In order to be able to break down estrogen in sufficient quantities, the body needs various vitamins and trace elements. This includes:

  • Vitamin B6,
  • Vitamin B12,
  • Vitamin C,
  • Vitamin E,
  • selenium
  • and magnesium.

Sunflower and pumpkin seeds, sesame, poppy seeds and cashew nuts not only contain a lot of magnesium, but also provide the body with selenium. Citrus fruits, peppers and cabbage are a good source of vitamin C. Vitamin E can be found in oil plants and nuts, among other things. Fruits with a particularly high vitamin E content include avocados, blueberries and black currants. The majority of vitamin B12 is only found in foods of animal origin. Vitamin B6 is also mainly found in meat such as poultry, game, beef or pork. But fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardine as well as potatoes, green leafy vegetables and cabbage also serve as a source of vitamin B6.

Cabbage for hormonal complaints

The different types of cabbage are not particularly well known as medicinal plants - quite wrongly, because they contain many substances that influence the hormone system, among other things. Diindolylmethane (DIM) is one of these ingredients. In short, DIM can lower the level of estrogen in the blood. The substance occurs naturally in broccoli, Brussels sprouts or cauliflower. Consuming 500 grams of broccoli daily can improve the estrogen ratio in the body. If you don't want to eat cabbage every day, you can also use dietary supplements with DIM.

Aromatase inhibitors lower estrogen levels

The aromatase enzyme converts testosterone into estrogen. However, there are several natural aromatase inhibitors that can stop this conversion process. This includes resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that is found primarily in grapes. Omega-3 fatty acids can also inhibit aromatase in the body and are therefore a good choice for too many female hormones. Walnuts, sardines, mackerel and other saltwater fish are rich in health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids.

Green tea is known for its positive effects on health. Not only does it have a strong antioxidant effect, it can also lower aromatase levels in the body and thus help regulate hormone levels. Another known aromatase inhibitor is the ginkgo. Ginkgo extract has a positive influence on the ability to remember and learn and also lowers the level of estrogen in the blood by inhibiting aromatase.

But especially women with too high estrogen levels should exercise caution when consuming aromatase inhibitors. If the aromatase enzyme is inhibited too much, the testosterone level in the blood can rise.

Medicinal plants for too many female hormones

Various medicinal plants can also be used to regulate hormones. One of the great medicinal plants for women is the lady's mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris). Although the beneficial effects of the herb on women’s ailments and hormonal complaints have not been scientifically proven, the women’s coat has been used successfully in folk medicine and naturopathy for many centuries. In the case of hormonal complaints, a tea can be made from the dried herb. We recommend up to three cups a day. The lady's mantle can also be taken as a mother tincture.

The liver plays a crucial role in hormone depletion. If there are functional disorders, the level of hormones in the blood increases. If you have too many female hormones, you should pay special attention to your liver. A tea cure with liver plants is suitable for this. These plants include:

  • Yarrow,
  • Dandelion,
  • Centaury,
  • Turmeric,
  • Peppermint,
  • Milk thistle
  • and wormwood.

A liver wrap can also be easily performed with the tea infusion. The combination of warmth and moisture increases blood flow to the liver and stimulates liver function. For a liver wrap, simply soak a dry cotton cloth well with the warm tea infusion, squeeze it out and then place it on the area of ​​the liver. Then place a hot water bottle on the towel and wrap another dry towel tightly around your body. A rest period of 30 minutes is recommended.
