How an infusion can increase life expectancy

Can a protein contained in the blood be used in the future to increase our general life expectancy? Researchers have now found that injecting a protein from the blood of younger mice appears to be a type of fountain of youth for older mice. The infusion increased the life expectancy of the animals by almost 20 percent.

A recent study by the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri found that a protein in the blood of younger mice injected into older mice improved the lifespan of the older animals. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal "Cell Metabolism".

What is eNAMPT?

A protein called eNAMPT, found in the blood of younger mice, can keep older rodents healthy and alive for longer. Older mice injected with the protein improved cognitive function and sleep quality, and the animals had an almost 20 percent longer lifespan. In humans, this corresponds to a massive increase in life expectancy from 79 to 91 years, the authors of the study report. The results suggest that this method could be the secret to fighting age-related diseases and an anti-aging method for humans. The protein eNAMPT normally plays a role in the generation of energy. However, as the body ages, the cells lose efficiency in generating this energy, known as NAD, the researchers explain. Since it is known that NAD inevitably decreases with age, many researchers are interested in finding anti-aging measures that can maintain NAD levels in old age.

ENAMPT clearly increases life expectancy

In the current study, one group of older mice was given concentrated eNAMPT from younger mice and another group was given saline. The mice in the saline group all died within about 2.4 years, while the animals given eNAMPT lived about 2.8 years. This means that the lifespan of the mice in the protein group was approximately 16 percent longer than that of the animals in the control group. Older mice with a higher concentration of this blood component also had better sleep quality, improved cognitive function in memory tests and ran more in the wheels in their cages, the authors report. It is noteworthy that eNAMPT can be drawn from the blood of young mice and given to older mice, resulting in the older mice showing a significant improvement in their health, including increased physical activity and better sleep, the researchers add.

What role does the hypothalamus play?

The reason why we age faster when the proteins break down is probably related to the hypothalamus, the authors speculate. The hypothalamus is the region of the brain that is known to be important for social behavior and hormone production. It is largely regulated by the protein under investigation. It was only recently discovered that stem cells in the hypothalamus control the body's aging process. Since the level of the key protein examined decreases during aging, the hypothalamus no longer functions as well, which is why the lifespan is shortening, the researchers suspect. For future research, the team would like to investigate whether low levels of the eNAMPT protein are associated with diseases in the elderly and whether it can be used as an anti-aging intervention.
